ספר מלאכי הוא חלק מתרי עשר, קובץ הכולל ספרי נבואה קצרים. על פי המסורת, ספר זה מציין את חתימת תקופת הנבואה בישראל. מלאכי ניבא בימי בית המקדש השני, ונבואותיו מבקרות את הכהנים ואת דרכי עבודת הא-ל הפסולות שבידיהם וכן מזהירות את העם מפני חוסר הנאמנות שלהם כלפי נשותיהם וכלפי אלוהים. עם זאת מלאכי מדגיש את אהבתו של הא-ל לעמו, מתאר את ברכות ה' בעתיד ומעודד את ישראל לחזור בתשובה.Malachi is the last book of the Prophets, and according to rabbinic tradition, marks the end of prophecy in Israel. Speaking during the Second Temple period, Malachi criticizes the priests for their disingenuous ritual worship in the Temple and chastises the people for their infidelity to their spouses and to God. Yet he also emphasizes God's love for Israel and encourages the people to repent, describing God’s future blessings.
