It was published as an appendix to *Yahel Ohr*, a Zohar commentary by the Vilna Gaon, with a note from the publisher crediting Rabbi Luria with having discovered, copied, and arranged the Vilna Gaon’s kabbalistic writings, which prevented them from being lost. The publisher, Rabbi Samuel Luria, called the work *Nefesh David, *The Soul of David* in English, an allusion to a connection between a sage’s eternal soul and the words he leaves behind.
