Written by Rabbi Shimon (ibn) Lavi, a leader of 16th-century Libyan Jewry, it displays intellectual independence from the influential kabbalistic schools of Safed, instead demonstrating influence of earlier Spanish Kabbalah and philosophy. Central features include philosophical terminology, metaphorical interpretation, and his view of Zohar study as a path to meditation on God.
